First Steps service users have been supported through our award winning Befriending service for a number of years.

Many of our Befrienders are ex-service users who having received a positive recovery from their support carry on as an associate to First Steps and provide their time to support current service users with a personal and confidential support via email.

Recognised by NHS Englands national Integrated Personal Commissioning team in November 2017 as a service that truly transforms peoples lives impacted by eating disorders, we constantly need to recruit and train new Befrienders to provide support to young people and adults.

Our Befrienders are matched to with an agreed number of service users for example, a parent who may have attended our skills for carers training programme and received support for their child from First Steps is best placed to support a new parent experiencing a similar situation.  Whilst we do not have young people themselves as Befrienders, we do match an adult with lived experience to young people as current eating disorders service users, this way the young person receives a lived experience perspective to help them support their own self-care.
